Originally from Turin, Italy, Andrea Cavaliere has cooked around the world. From England to New York and now Los Angeles, he’s been working for the SoHo House Group for seven years, an English hospitality company that operates hotels, private clubs and restaurants around the world. The 3rd Annual Beer Float Showdown, presented by FoodGPS.com, where five chefs are paired with five California breweries to create an original beer float wrapped up today. The judges were prominent beer and ice cream aficionados; the attendees. The competition included chef Ilan Hall of The Gorbals and “Top Chef” with Tustin Brewery and Smog City Brewing Co. brewer/owner Jonathan Porter, chef CJ Jacobson of The Yard and “Top Chef” with Firestone Walker rep Jace Milstead, chef Laurent Quenioux of Vertical Wine Bistro and LQ@SK with Beachwood BBQ and Brewing brewmaster Julian Shrago, chefs Andre Guerrero, Jan Purdy of The Oinkster and Maximiliano with Eagle Rock Brewery brewmaster Jeremy Raub and chef Thi Tran and Nguyen Tran of Starry Kitchen with Ladyface Ale Companie brewmaster Dave Griffiths and owner Cyrena Nouzille.
Eating contests are never pretty, just watch an episode of Adam Richman’s Man V. Food. Last weekend, in downtown Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo, top MLE (Major League Eating) competitors like Matt Stonie, Sonya Thomas and Patrick Bertoletti came to compete for $5,000 and bragging rights at the 5th annual gorge-fest that is the Day-Lee Foods World Gyoza Eating Championship and joined by hundreds of spectators. The previous record was held by 2011 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest champion, Joey Chestnut with 231 gyozas. And this time the record was broken by number two competitive eater in America, Chicago’s Patrick Bertoletti with 264 gyozas in ten minutes.
