Based in Ft. Collins, CO, New Belgium Brewing is the third biggest craft brewery in the United States. Recently they announced plans to expand distribution into Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Now with over 400 employees, distribution in 28 states and a state of art brewing facility, the brewery has gone a long way since it was founded by Jeff Lebesch and Kim Jordan in 1991. We sat down with employee number three, Jamie Mastin, and spoke to him about CEO Kim Jordan, Ranger IPA and drinking Chimay in 1983.

Thanks to President Jimmy Carter homebrewing was made legal in the U.S. in 1979 (but in 2011 it’s illegal in only Alabama and Mississippi). The American Homebrewers Association was formed by Charlie Papazian in 1978. As of 2009, there are over 750,000 homebrewers, 300 homebrew competitions and over 800 homebrew clubs in the U.S. We attended the 33rd Annual AHA National Homebrewers Conference in San Diego last weekend — here is what we learned about these passionate hobbyists.
