American Airlines files for bankruptcy

American Airlines and parent company, AMR Corporation has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy today. The airline will continue to operate normally, honoring tickets and reservations. Frequent flyer program will not be interrupted. Thomas W. Horton, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of AMR and American Airlines assured AA customers with the following statement, “American’s customers are always our top priority and they can continue to depend on us for the safe, reliable travel and high quality service they know and expect from us.”

AMR plans to restructure and to “emerge even stronger as a global leader known for excellence and innovation, a travel partner customers seek out, and a carrier that serves communities throughout the world.” The filings will have no direct legal impact outside of the U.S.
