The Different Types of Beer Explained: A Detailed Guide

Are you interested in learning about all the different types of beer that there is to choose from?

Perhaps you’re trying to get further into the craft beer scene. Maybe you’re wanting to try different beers that you’ve never had before.

Whatever the case might be, knowing the different beers will help you choose which ones you’d like to try.

Brewers all over the world make many different variations, but they all fit into the category of one of the types listed below.

Here are all the main types of beers that are out there in the world. Be sure to try them all and find your preferred palate.

India Pale Ale (IPA)

Even first-time beer drinkers have heard the term “IPA” in passing before. However, they might not know that it stands for India Pale Ale.

These beers are known for their taste, which infuses hops and fruity flavors. Some variations of IPAs are hoppier than others, some are more citrusy than others.

The taste also has a bitter taste to it and has a higher alcohol level than lagers, pale ales, and many other types on this list.

It’s a beer type that brewers and beer fanatics go crazy for. It’s arguably the most loved beer among the craft beer scene, as it offers so many different styles and flavors.

Better yet, there are many different IPA styles such as Belgian IPAs, West Coast IPAs, Double IPAs, and Session IPAs to name a few.

Lager

If you’re just starting out on your craft beer journey or would consider yourself a base-level beer drinker, then lagers are for you.

For those of you that drink the traditional domestic beers such as Yuengling (east coasters), Budweiser, or Coors, you’re drinking a lager.

They’re perfect for beer novices because of their low alcohol content and light body flavor. It’s the perfect “first step” for anyone that wants to try different beer types down the line.

If you were to pick up an IPA for your first-ever beer, you’d most likely spit it out. But after drinking lagers for a while, you’ll develop a taste for hoppier beers such as Pale Ales and IPAs.

For all you novices looking to get a gift for the beer-lover in your life, be sure to consider these beer gift ideas.

Brown Ales

Smoky, sweet, and amber… these are three words you might not think would make a great pairing, but they certainly do for brown ales.

Brown ales are made with a focus on the malt ingredients while the beer is being brewed.

They are a bit of a secret, even in the craft beer community, but their mixture of different flavors make them a work of art.

They’re no heavier in alcohol content than a pale ale, but they give off a richer flavor closer to that of a stout.

Those of you that enjoy Guinness, but want something a bit lighter in color, you might fall in love with brown ales.

Pale Ales

So… you have a taste for the hops, but you don’t enjoy getting a beer that’s too heavy in alcohol content.

Just a step down from the IPA is a pale ale, one of the most popular beer types in the world.

Every brewery that you go to will have a different variation of a pale ale. In fact, many craft beer fanatics enjoy trying American pale ales, Imperial pale ales, and English pale ales.

If you want a drink that boasts hoppy flavors but goes down smooth with every sip, you will develop a liking for pale ales. In fact, many consider pale ales to be the next “step” from those that want to venture beyond lagers.

Pilsners

if you take a drink of a pale ale and still think you need a bit more of a warm-up to the hoppy flavors, give pilsners a try.

Pilsners are essentially hoppy lagers. They have a low alcohol content with a range of hops mixed into the brewing process.

They’ll still offer that crisp and refreshing flavor that you’re looking for, making them the perfect beer to drink on a hot summer’s day. They also have the clear body of a lager, giving a clean look that many people are searching for.

The next time you want a drink by the pool, reach for a hoppy pilsner… you’ll be glad you did!

Porters

Maybe you’re the type that, when you feel like having a beer, you want something that’s heavy and filling.

If so, then you’re going to love porters. Porters are exceptionally popular in the UK for their dark color and rich ingredients.

Many breweries in America like to have a different play on porters in order to cater to their clientele’s need for adventure. Because of that, you’ll find crazy flavors like a PB&J porter, peanut butter porter, chocolate sundae porter, etc.

If you like stouts, but wish for something with more of a chocolate flavor, then porters are the beer type for you!

Give All These Different Types of Beer a Shot

Now that you’ve seen all the different types of beer, it’s time for you to extend your palate.

Be sure to consider all the different types of beer that you might like to try. If you’re just starting out, try starting with a lager, then a pilsner, and then a pale ale or IPA from there.

Exploring the Joys of Sichuan Cooking at Home

With the coronavirus lockdowns still occurring in parts of the country, people have gotten creative with ways to pass the time at home. Even those who never spent much time cooking or baking before having found it to be a pleasant diversion.

Preparing Sichuan food is especially popular. As one of the most loved cuisines in China, Sichuan food is hot, spicy, and comforting. This is just one of many fun facts about it.

The Sichuanese and Their Love for Spicy Food

It’s been over 2,000 years since peppercorn first appeared on food in the Chinese region of Sichuan. Locals and visitors to the region have loved it ever since. Today, peppercorn continues to be an essential part of any Sichuan dish. In Chinese characters, the term peppercorn literally means numbing spice.

Although it has been around for two millennia now, the popularity of peppercorn really took off in Sichuan in the 1600s. It was at that time that it got even hotter and claimed its place as a national treasure.

Sichuan Food is Among the Most Distinct of Chinese Dishes

In the United States, lobster is popular on the East Coast while sourdough bread is all the rage on the West Coast. The popularity of foods by region works much the same way in China. Cantonese dishes, for example, are known for their sweetness while dishes hailing from Hunan typically taste hot and sour.

People recognize Sichuan food for its peppercorns, vegetables, beef, and rice. The combination of the other ingredients and the spiciness of the peppercorns truly makes Sichuan food unforgettable.

Foods For Immune Support During A Worldwide Pandemic

Fact: People are getting sick everywhere in the world.  The Novel Coronavirus has taken a firm hold on the world, and it’s more important now than ever before to know what foods will help keep you healthy.

While you’re stuck at home, fill your belly with things that will boost your immunity and sharpen your body’s fighting abilities.  Take a quick read through these tasty suggestions, and try adding foods to your diet that enhance your immune system.

Elderberries

Elderberries have long been an old flu remedy.  The small berries pack quite a punch of healthiness into your body, offering a slew of antioxidants that will also fight off inflammation.  There’s no downside to these tasty berries, and you can find yummy gummies made of elderberries too.

Button Mushrooms

Button mushrooms are a great source of selenium, B vitamins, riboflavin, and niacin.  Those words may not mean much to your untrained ears, but these health specs are fantastic.

Selenium deficiencies can cause your body to falter when fighting flu symptoms, and riboflavin/niacin both boost the body’s immune response.

Citrus Fruits

The vitamin C boost found in citrus fruits is commonly the primary reason people seek them out in terms of health.  The immune system is rewarded with more white blood cells when you have plenty of vitamin C in your diet.

Try eating your fruits off the grill to put a different spin on dinner.  Men need a consistent 90mg per day, and women need around 75mg of vitamin C per day to boost immunity.

Red bell peppers

Citrus fruits aren’t the only excellent source of vitamin C.  Red bell peppers trump the vitamin C potential of any citrus fruit you can find.  They have nearly three times as much per portion.  The vitamins in red bell peppers are also great for maintaining healthy skin.

Garlic

Garlic is great for immunity, but it also helps to slow the hardening of arteries.  Cultures have used garlic as a healing additive for hundreds of years, and the trend shows no signs of slowing.

Broccoli

You can’t go wrong adding broccoli to your diet.  It’s full of healthy vitamins your body needs to stay strong, and broccoli is even better for you when it’s not cooked.  Save yourself the trouble, and eat fresh broccoli.

Oysters

Oysters are a well-known aphrodisiac, but they’re also a great source of zinc.  Zinc helps to create new white blood cells, which are primarily responsible for your body’s immune response.

Yogurt

Yogurt with added vitamin D is your best choice.  The boost of vitamin D helps the body fight against cold and flu symptoms.  Check to make sure you purchase yogurt infused with live cultures, so you may also reap the benefits of the probiotics.

How Jack Landsmanas creates sustainable food security for Mexico

Jack Landsmanas

With technology growing and improving at exponential rates around the world, it’s time to start focusing on sustainability. That’s what entrepreneur Jack Landsmanas’ company Corporativo Kosmos is focusing on now: adopting and further developing sustainable practices.

As the leader of Mexico’s largest foodservice provider, Jack Landsmanas takes the initiative to invest in new technologies and innovations within the food industry, with the intent to give back.

The History of Corporativo Kosmos

Corporativo Kosmos was founded in 1959 by Don Pablo Landsmanas, Jack Landsmanas’ grandfather who strove to make a difference in his community. Before it became the powerhouse it is today, Pablo Landsmanas’ business began as a small butcher shop called La Modelo. With the passion and drive to create an impact on the world around him, Pablo created a company culture focused on serving others first, which organically grew into the ethical corporation it is today.

Now, under Jack Landsmanas’ leadership, the companies and organizations that comprise Corporativo Kosmos move tons of food every day, proudly serving and feeding communities across Mexico – honoring his grandfather’s legacy.

Sustainability in the Food Industry

Sustainability is all about looking at the big picture, making headway now to benefit the goals of tomorrow and on. This concept comes with placing value on optimization, reducing waste, and satisfying the needs of consumers today and future generations.

Jack Landsmanas believes that sustainable businesses are key to success in the future, but they’re also essential for supporting domestic and international economies, the earth, and up leveling the quality of life worldwide. He says, “We’ve launched a few sustainability projects with Corporativo Kosmos, but I think sustainability-focused ventures are the next big thing. If we can build a better battery, better solar panels, or more efficient water conservation solutions, we can save so many lives around the world. Life would be so much better for everyone. And the demand is there, too.”

The development of biotechnology is the first step to achieving sustainability: starting in the fields, all the way to the kitchen table. Starting with crop growth, biotechnology specializes in researching improvements for the quality of crops, reducing contamination, and preventing loss of crops from pest infestation.

This is where Jack Landsmanas takes sustainability a step further. Under his leadership, Corporativo Kosmos created a Sustainability Platform and established specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the company per The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States’ long-term goals.

Sustainable Development Goals

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States established an agenda to work toward sustainable development by 2030, which includes a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals:

  1. Ending poverty worldwide
  2. Ending hunger and malnutrition
  3. Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all
  4. Ensuring inclusive and quality life-long education and learning
  5. Achieving gender equality, specifically through the empowerment of all women and girls
  6. Ensuring the availability of quality water and adequate sanitation
  7. Ensuring access to clean energy for all
  8. Promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth and employment
  9. Promoting sustainable industrialization and fostering innovation
  10. Reducing inequality within and among countries
  11. Making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
  12. Ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns
  13. Taking urgent action to combat climate change
  14. Conserving oceans, seas, and marine life and resources
  15. Sustainably managing forests and combating biodiversity loss
  16. Promoting peaceful societies, and preventing conflict and distress migration
  17. Revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development

Essentially, Jack Landsmanas’s mission with Corporativo Kosmos boils these goals down to 3 main focus areas:

Zero Hunger

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States approximates that only 40% of produced food is consumed by humans and animals; the rest becomes waste. 30% of crops are rendered inedible due to pests and plant diseases, and consumers waste an additional 30% of food once it’s in their possession. With the proper use of biotechnology and utilizing ethical suppliers, less food will be wasted worldwide.

The next step toward achieving food security worldwide is promoting responsible production and consumption by establishing a circular economy. In a circular economy, resources are used for as long as possible, with every ounce of value extracted from the products while in use. From there, the leftovers are recovered and regenerated for as long as possible. Practically speaking, this means replacing plastic packaging with recyclable or biodegradable materials and investing in renewable energy sources.

Clean Water:

Water is a highly valuable and non-negotiable resource within the food industry. It’s used in every step in production and distribution. From growing food on farms, washing fresh produce, cooking, and sanitizing, clean water is an absolute necessity.

Jack Landsmanas specifically incorporates water-saving strategies such as the closed-loop system and vacuum evaporation.

Combating Climate Change

All resources ultimately come from the earth. With weather patterns becoming more extreme due to human-induced climate change, caring for the earth is more important now than ever before.

This is where Jack Landsmanas’ Sustainability Platform comes in. In addition to reducing waste, recycling where possible, and incorporating water-saving strategies, Corporativo Kosmos takes a more personal approach. Within Corporativo Kosmos is The Pablo Landsmanas Foundation, which promotes the protection of the environment and promoting economic development in Mexico as a result.

In essence, Jack Landsmanas, Corporativo Kosmos, and The Pablo Landsmanas Foundation are all working a sustainable future for you, for them, for Mexico.

5 Common Mistake to Avoid When Buying Your First Fridge Online

Often, when you move into a new home or apartment, you don’t have to worry about the appliances. You move in with a fridge, oven, range, and every other basic appliance already installed.

But what happens when your fridge has worn out, or if you just happen to want a new one? Maybe you need a new style for your kitchen vision, or maybe you’re looking at buying a refrigerator for a different floor of the house.

Whatever the reason, now you have to do something new and kind of weird: you need to buy a refrigerator.

Buying a new refrigerator online might seem a bit daunting when you’re just getting started. There are seemingly endless options; how do you know which is the right one for you?

If you want to avoid making any first-time buyer’s mishaps, you’re in the right place. Read on to learn how.

1. Don’t Forget to Check the Size and Fit

So you’ve found what looks to be the perfect fridge. It’s the right color, it has all of the best features, and it’s at a price point that you can deal with. You’ve ordered it and received it into you’re home and you’re feeling really good about it. Great!

Except, problem.

You go to put it into your kitchen and it’s way too big to fit into the nook that the old fridge left. You could probably tear down one of the dividers or sand some height off of the top of the nook, but ultimately, this is going to be a costly job.

In other words, you need to do some measuring beforehand. Measure the current fridge that you have and measure the space that the fridge is nestled in. You might be able to get away with a fridge slightly smaller or bigger than the one you have currently as long as it fits within that space.

Going too small isn’t a huge deal, it might just be an aesthetic issue. Going too big, though, is going to be a problem.

2. Make Sure You Get the Right Style

Not all fridges are alike. If you’ve never bought your own fridge before, it’s likely that you’re used to the standard fridge or the top freezer refrigerator

When you’re doing your browsing, you might make the mistake of only looking at these. However, did you know that you don’t necessarily have to stay in that box, especially if you have a decent amount of room in your refrigerator nook?

Depending on your refrigeration needs, there are other options.

Some fridges come with the freezer on the bottom. In these, the freezer space is typically larger, making them great for meal preppers or people with large families.

Fren-door fridges open on both sides. They’re very stylish and generally have the freezer on the left side.

Don’t make the mistake of restricting yourself by your experience. You don’t get to buy a fridge very often (hopefully, at least). Make sure that you’re buying what you like, not just what you’re used to.

3. Check the Capacity

So the fridge that you’ve chosen is the right style and dimensions-wise, it seems to be the right size. You’re in the clear, right?

Well, maybe.

Make sure that you’re checking the capacity of the fridge (and freezer) itself. A big flashy exterior with a cramped interior makes for a very useless refrigerator, especially if you’re someone who keeps a lot of perishable food on hand.

Often this will be included with the dimensions, but just ensure that you’re reading everything correctly before you place your final order.

4. Check Around for Features

So you’ve got the style, the size, the capacity; you’re all done, right?

Not quite.

Did your old fridge have an ice maker? What about a water spout and filter? Did it have a little smart panel with the weather or some apps on it? Would you like any of these things?

Why go without if you’re already spending the money on a new refrigerator?

You’re probably not going to be able to get everything that you want in one fridge, but don’t neglect all of the features that you’d like just because you’re so used to not having them. Buying a refrigerator is a chance to get these features.

These things are convenient, and if you can get one or two of them on your new fridge, you’ll probably be thanking yourself later. Make a list before you shop of all of the things that you’d like your fridge to have from most important to least important. This will help you narrow down your choices substantially.

5. Internet Price Shop

Price shopping online can be a bit of a risky game, but it’s definitely worthwhile on a high-expense item like a major appliance.

Once you’ve found your dream fridge, keep that tab open. Then, take the image of the fridge and use Google image search to see what other shops it comes up in.

You can then go to all of those sites and see if any of them are offering better deals on your refrigerator, or if they have any current applicable discount codes available to you. This is a bit of a tedious process, but you could end up saving hundreds of dollars if you get lucky enough.

That makes the price shopping worthwhile.

Make sure to check reviews of the sites and refrigerators to make sure that the prices aren’t too good to be true. Sometimes sites aren’t all that they seem on the surface.

Buying a Refrigerator Online Is Easy

There are so many options for buying a refrigerator online. It’s never been easier to shop for appliances. Just make sure not to make any potential mistakes and you’ll be sitting at home with a fridge that you love in no time.
